New York City developing LED street lamp system

New York City is replacing its 50 year old, high-pressure sodium bulb street lamp technology with a custom-designed LED-based lamp system. The street lamps were designed to meet the lighting needs of specific locations (street corner, mid-street, and park), and each head utilizes up to 100 separate LED bulbs. The LED units consume 30% less energy and enjoy a lifespan that is twice the length of conventional sodium bulb units.

Testing is scheduled to take place in 2009, with pilot projects launching shortly thereafter.
